A Blog Novel- Part 2. Choosing a Female Character
This seems to be the year of exploring the “world” of Steampunk and related categories. James and I have embarked on a mission to create fun Steampunk costumes for Holloween so we’re spending a lot of time browsing the internet, our local bargain bin stores and Etsy.com to fine things we like. On the whole I’m a little less adventurous and tend toward buying the clothing and just embellishing it rather than sewing something from nothing. James is just about 360 degrees from me wanting to sew things or find pieces to do major alterations on to create is costume. Now to the novel.
I’ve already introduced the main male character in my store but have yet to actually create the female (cause you know it’s got to have a love interest!) because I wasn’t sure who or what she really was yet. At last I’ve come close to deciding her character and writing it down will help me flesh out the details. Basically, Consul Chloe Xavier., will be an elf.eared/faerie.winged/victorian.clothing.wearing Emma from the Jane Austin novel Emma……only she carries a big western riffle and is a low level politician of the West Wing Wrights.
Chloe comes from the upper class Leading Families but like most women she has a mind of her own. She has an opinion on everything be it politics, technology, healthcare, love and marriage, dress, dragon lore and the true history of clockwork origins. While most Leading Families openly support the monsters that lurk through the streets and those that create them, Chloe, does what she can for the poor unfortunates. As long as she doesn’t slow one of the Leading Families projects her family has no problem or interest in her meddling with the “lowly fools” even to the point of her being seen with one or two of them at tea, operas, balls, or ballets that are a main stay for sharing gossip on the latest gadget or monster they are helping fund. They have had concern for her recent plans to open a free health clinic near the poor district that often has attacks from rogue steam machines. It would look bad if something happened to one of their own. Quite frankly, Chloe isn’t opposed to technology. Most of her simple comforts, and a few not so simple, come from technology however “…. we really must draw the line somewhere!”
