Raw Food – Testing the Waters

Today I headed over to Starbucks for lunch (I’m SO healthy, r-i-g-h-t). Anyway, they had some new and interesting food items next to the register so I gave a Two Moms In The Raw gluten free blueberry granola bar a try. This bar is truly any bird’s dream packed with Millet, Buckwheat, Coconut, Flaxseed, Sunflower Seeds, Seasame Seeds, Pecans, Almonds, Pepitas, Apples, Agave, Cinnamon, Sea Salt and Blueberries.

If you know anything about me, you know I view food with lots of skepticism. If I’m not sure (even though I bought it AND thought it looked tasty) I’ll have hubby taste it first. That isn’t always a good indicator either since he likes mushrooms and mustard both of which I personally don’t consider edible. The Raw bar looked safe enough to try on my own so I went for it after thoroughly eying the package (for about 3 hours, cause ReaLLy you can nEver be too safe with food! yes I’m weird). I think realistically the two things that pushed me toward trying this, completely unrelated except for health, was a seminar presented at my office yesterday about dieting by increasing fiber presented by The Full Plate Diet (they have a cool fiber calculator) and 23andMe.com’s DNA website that was having a sale today. My co-worker loves connecting with distant relatives on 23 and Me and inspired me to purchase two kits today during an awesome sale, basically you spit in a tube and say hello to family.

Back to the RAW bar. I love the packaging. You can see the nuts and seeds though a  little window making it less scary. The word RAW is Boldly visible across the front when most healthy food isn’t bold at all and the package design is soothing with blues and greens telling you it’s safe because it’s organic. Tasting is believing. Here we go.

Ok, here is the verdict. The bar is a little bit chewy and a little bit sweet. The nuts are at first easy to chew but get harder to chew as you go along. My jaw was a bit tired by the end but I liked it. I liked the tiny seeds that are fun to bite. There is definitely a cinnamon flavor that nicely complements the nuts and sweet blueberry flavor. I wouldn’t have thought cinnamon and blueberry went together but they really do. It isn’t overwhelmingly exciting or underwhelmingly boring like most grocery store brands So I’ll definitely go back for more.

My favorite part is probably the story behind these RAW bars. Check it out if you are looking for something healthy that tastes good and has a good background. It looks like you can order off their website too. I might try that to avoid the high amount of sugar that was in my coffee at lunch.
