I definitely have a LOT to learn about felting, as I'm not sure how to even use those tools yet :) This soap project is my first time ever felting anything. I am actually felting soaps and selling them w/ 100% of the proceeds going to Baltimore's 'Making Strides Against Breast Cancer' walk in October. I've sold over 25 so far...they are very popular! So needless to say I've been felting my butt off haha. Getting better with practice, but still a long way off from the beautiful soaps you made! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for asking. I'd meant to write a post about it but never got back to it. I used a felting needle to add color to the spots I wanted.
Hi Cheryl. I recently viewed your blog entry with photos of your felted soap and I was blown away by your gorgeous designs (I didn't see an option for leaving a comment on that entry, so here I am)! I recently started felting soap with alpaca and I cannot figure out how you got such tight, straight lines in your designs. Would you mind sharing your secret?

This solution has a nice combination of oils and waxes that provide a barrier between the sensitive skin on your lips and everything that comes in contact with them. Since this solution is vegan it is not as sturdy as my formula that contains bees wax and lanolin that was a replacement for my favorite Carmex. The original Mint Julep formula is still available in my etsy shop.

The ingredients in this solution with some descriptions found around the internet:

castor seed oil - contains fatty acids and in small amounts is a great alternative to petroleum-derived lubricants.

palm kernel oil - an edible plant oil derived from the kernel of the oil palm. Palm kernel oil is composed of fatty acids and considered a skin-conditioning agent, esterified with glycerol just like any ordinary fat. It is high in saturated fatty acids, about 80%. The oil palm gives its name to the 16-carbon saturated fatty acid palmitic acid found in palm kernel oil, palm oil, and coconut oil.

avocado oil - valued for its regenerative and moisturizing properties
coconut oil - heat stable oil that is solid up to 76 degrees. Slow to oxidize and resistant to rancidity, lasting up to two years due to high saturated fat content.
skin moisturizerand reduces protein loss when used in hair.

aloe barbadensis leaf extract - commonly called Aloe vera. May be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, minor skin infections. Aloe vera is also used for soothing the skin, and keeping the skin moist to help avoid flaky scalp and skin in harsh and dry weather. Aloe Vera may also be used as a moisturizer for oily skin. Some studies, for example, show that aloe vera promotes the rates of healing.
carnauba wax - a plant based was also called Brazil wax and palm wax, is a wax of the leaves of the palm Copernicia prunifera. Used in cobination with another wax to thicken cosmetics. Considered vegan.
candelilla wax - a plant based wax derived from the leaves of the Candelilla shrub.Has a low melting point and is used as a thickener. Considered vegan.

Packaging can definitely be a tricky competent of your product. There are just so many options out there! I like your idea to find more eco conscious packaging though, I see why you're not sold on the roll up lip balm tubes but I like that idea. I think they're totally cute too!
