Socks and Mitts

With the colder weather I’ve been feeling chilled so the mitts have been flying off the needles. Unfortunately, the mitts for me (read – two finished pairs for others are done) are flying off in single mitts instead of pairs so I have one blue mitt almost finished and one green mitt that’s done. No pairs though.

On that ADD-ish note I started up some mini socks for my cousin’s baby girl that will be arriving in the spring.

Hopefully the socks will be finished before spring

Had a wonderful time at Sock Summit 2011! Unfortunately, my poor computer did not enjoy the trip and is currently having antivirus treatments. Hubby also caught and shared a mild cold so there won’t be too much going on in this post. I did find several wonderful bloggers who did manage to post about their trip along with pictures which is probably what you really want to see anyway

Lots of yummy yarn pictures and 2 finished socks once my computer is fixed….which might be several days from now based on how slow it’s going. Now off to bed. 13 hours of driving and a full day of work with only 5 hours of sleep in the middle and a hosed work computer ALSO doesn’t leave me with much left over energy. Till tomorrow.

Friday at Sock Summit

Wednesday and Thursday Hubby and I headed up to Portland for Sock Summit. We stopped over night in Grants Pass which if you get get the chance is a beautiful place to visit. We stopped at the park across from the Hells Canyon river boats to eat our picnic lunch. The geese, ducks and pigeons were incredible to watch. The locals obviously feed these greedy birds religiously but I enjoyed seeing them even if it wasn’t exactly natural.

Thursday night we made our way into Portland. The traffic here is rediculous! I can deffinitely see why there is a rail system available. So far we have walked to all of our desinations. That’s all well and good but by 3pm my feet were killing me and hubby and I headed back to our room for a few hours of rest (read sock knitting). I’m getting ahead of myself.

I had a wonderful self striping class from Deb Barnhill and an amusing lecture by Tina Newton from Blue Moon on dying yarn.

I will admit to being too chicken to approach Stephanie Pearl-McPhee when I saw her TWICE and also having a celebrity freak out over seeing Steven Ambrose just Sitting! Do celebs really just SIT?!?! This really must be what people feel about Hollywood stars. I did tell on myself and he obliged by calling me a chicken (self-requested) and asked if I would be around tomorrow.

Lunch was very yummy at Burgerville. The veggie burger was delicious. The order line as ridiculous as the traffic.

Well it seems I’m having issues getting the rest of my photos so gratuitous yarn photos will have to come later. What I do have is sock progress.

3am Pie

The plan was to make pie earlier in the day but I ended up taking a 3hr nap then spending the evening with my mom leaving only the wee hours to buy ingredients at Walmart because they are one of 2 places that are actually open at midnight and the only one with semi decent berries. So here I wait while my pie bakes trying not to fall asleep on the couch which would likely result in burnt pie. Here’s the recipe I’m trying out along with pie dough I’ve had in my freezer from Apple Hill that I’ve had thawing since Thursday night and likely would go bad in the next day, hence my 3am madness.

Earlier today before the wonderful nap I did manage to wind this lovely, wonderfully soft, Cascade Yarns Epiphany alpaca cashmere silk yarn in a beautiful royal blue color. I’ve already cast on AINSLEY SCARF (Floating Reversible Cables) by Bobbi Padgett

A few rows on my sock seems all I’m able to do tonight and it looks like my pie is done so I’ll leave you with a photo of my sock

Today was the big registration (finally!!!!) for Sock Summit 2011. I’m perfectly content with the classes I got into even though they weren’t the one’s I’d planned on originally. There are so many options to choose from it’s amazing.

That’s it for now but here are some flowers from my and my mother’s yards.

A Silver Birch hat I’m making as a gift. Honestly it will be a round hat when I’m done…..I hope.

and the posting of Sock Summit classes has inspired me to dig out my sock and start working on it again. After trying it on it isn’t as cute as I expected and a bit loose. Oh well. It’s good practice.

Estonian Socks and Sock 2 Day 7

These socks are knitting up so fast and yet so slow.

It took me an hour of knitting and frogging to figure out Eye of Partridge heel flap. It took me another hour trying to figure out what I was doing wrong on the gusset only to discover once done that I’d forgotten to knit the heel turn. I gave up on the heal turn and made some adjustments to the gusset that will hopefully work out ok. The top will continue in a K1 P1 rib stitch while the bottom will be stockinette.

I like this Eye of Partridge style of heel flap even though it took forever to pick it up. It really isn’t a hard repeat but it doesn’t help to watch Myth Buster shows while learning something new. The heel has extra padding but lays down better than the (ssk) two row style flap.

And the heal is still a little boxy but not more so than with a turned heel. I’m happy so far.

In other sock news I’ve finished up my first pair of socks! The second sock fought me every step of the way, the heal flap was ripped back several times, the gusset was ripped back several times, the toe decrease was ripped back….. I actually cried over the kitchener stitch mess around 1am. For some reason this sock HAD to be finished in less than 2 weeks. It showed me! My only consolation was that my first sock was started in the evening so, in hours it, was still finished in under two weeks.

Finished around 2:30am. Ug!

Philandering Socks

Fiber addiction is a problem I am happy to live with. It creates beautiful things like these, Estonian cast on, anklet socks. Trust me…they will knit up quickly!

The cast on method is new to me so it took me about 4 or 5 tries that were increasingly more frustrating. It was worth it in the end because I have a lovely lacey top to my sock.

The last several days have been really difficult to stick with one project at a time…..so I didn’t. And the sock has slowed down progress. There is just enough left to finish in one night which I could easily finish tomorrow. Problem is I’ve got startitis. There might even be another sock in the works but that’s just rumor at this point.

My sock progress has slowed with my wandering attention. Still hoping to finish this before two weeks are up. That seems reasonable considering the progress I made on sock one.
